LHS volunteers and their families came together at Harmony House for a celebration honoring their efforts throughout the year. Five year volunteers Frieda Weise, Jerry Chappell, and Beverly Jacobs were honored for their continued dedication to the LHS. The Volunteer of the Year was announced and Frances Brooks took home the prize for her multi-faceted efforts with the LHS.

History's Mysteries Lecture at Savage Library
This exciting conversation about the Maryland Industrial and Agricultural Institute drew approximately 15 participants out on a cold night. The group took part in a conversation about the mystery of the Institute which is said to have stood in Howard County Laurel in the early twentieth century. Participants discussed where the school might have stood, why it closed, why Laurelites don't know about it and more.

Feliz Año Nuevo! : A New Year's Celebration
Approximately 35 people attended our second annual New Year's Celebration. Children learned about Mexican New Year's traditions while tasting sweet tamales and pan dulce, doing crafts, taking part in an exciting countdown, and beating a piñata.

The bi-annual house tour took place on a beautiful winter day this year. 7 homes and businesses opened their doors to welcome House Tour Ticket Holders. Approximately 180 people took the tour on a bright December day.

Approximately 20 members joined us for an exciting lecture and potluck with Robert McLaren. Mr. McLaren discussed the basics of using DNA research for genealogy purposes. Participants were quite interested and had many questions answered by Mr. McLaren.

Over 100 people and 8 vendors joined the Laurel Historical Society in a celebration of local food in Laurel. Visitors were able to sample local restaurant's specialities. Participating restaurants included: Aunt Susan's Kitchen, Red Hot and Blue, Kafe Kabob, Toucan Taco, Fruit Flowers, Mango's Grill, Nuzbacks, and Main Street Sports Bar and Grill. Fall Fun Day Featuring the Wonderful World of Pumpkins
Approximately 55 people joined us for a wonderul fall day filled with Pumpkin related activities. Children decorated pumpkins, did pumpkin weaving, and made pumpkin seed mosaics. Special pumpkin treats were a delicious addition to a wonderful fall afternoon.

Free Genealogy Resources Lecture
About 30 people joined Mike Boivin and the Laurel Historical Society in a discussion on Free Genealogy Resources. Participants enjoyed a lively discussion on Genealogy Resources and learned many new ways to begin and continue their research.

Separate But Equal Has No Place: A Maryland Humanities Council Sponsored Lecture
Around 20 people joined the Laurel Historical Society and the Stanley Memorial Library at a program sponsored by the Maryland Humanities Council. In her lecture, Dr. Sims-Wood discussed the cases that led up to the Brown v. Board of Education Case that was taken to the Supreme Court.

A Trip Down Memory Lane with Elizabeth Leight
Approximately 65 people joined the Laurel Historical Society, the Maryland City at Russett Library, and Elizabeth Leight as she took a walk down memory lane. Reminiscing on 10 years as a Russett/Maryland City/Laurel Neighborhood Correspondent for the West County Gazette, Elizabeth shared never before seen photographs and memoriabilia with attendees.

Occurring a little late due to a rain delay, the Annual Potluck Picnic was a great success. Friends and Family of the LHS joined together for a fun evening at Avondale Park.

1950s Fun Fair at the Laurel Museum
Approximately 40 people came to the Laurel Museum for a 1950s style fair. Games included the bean bag toss, fishing, ring toss, and more. Contests were exciting and there were a lucky few winners at the Egg Toss, Pie Eating, and Hula Hoop contests.

Have you M.E.T.? Museum, Eats and Theater in Historic Laurel
Over 30 people joined the LHS, Main Street Bar and Grill, and Laurel Mill Playhouse for an evening of fun in Historic Laurel. The very 1950s evening began at the Laurel Museum with a behind the scenes tour of "Shake, Rattle 'n' Roll: Laurel in the 1950s". The group then traveled to Main Street Bar and Grill (Oliver's) for a very 1950s dinner. The night ended at the Laurel Mill Playhouse with "Pillow Talk".

Wanna Take in a Flick? The Laurel Historical Society Presents a 1950s Film Series
Approximately 40 people joined us for a nostalgic film series on several warm and sunny afternoons. Visitors were able to watch the classics: Funny Face, Rebel Without a Cause and Invasion of the Body Snatchers.

Have a Blast in the Past: A Kids Sunday in the 1950s at the Laurel Museum
This exciting afternoon at the Laurel Museum drew twenty children to share in the excitement of the 1950s. Children played with 1950s era toys including Mr. Potato Head, Paint by Number, Hula Hoops and more. They ended their afternoon with ice cream floats and popcorn snacks at the Soda Shop where they got to dance and do the limbo.

Lecture at the Maryland City at Russet Branch Library:
Shake, Rattle and Roll: Exploring the History of Laurel in the 1950s
This lecture drew fifteen people to the Maryland City at Russett Branch Library as Executive Director Lindsey Baker discussed life in Laurel in the 1950s. After the presentation, audience members were encouraged to share their own recollections of life in Laurel in the 1950s, many of whom were eager to do so.

Lecture: "Who Were Ozzie and Harriet?: The Roots of the 1950s Childhood Ideal"
Over thirty people joined us as Dr. Lindenmeyer, from UMBC discussed how growing up in the 1930s and 1940s affected parents who raised their children in the 1950s. Many attendees connected Dr. Lindenmeyer's theories to their own lives and an interesting conversation took place after her lecture.

Grand Opening of "Shake, Rattle 'n' Roll: Laurel in the 1950s"
The grand opening brought approximately 90 people through the doors of the Laurel Museum on a very sunny February day. Attendees learned more about Laurel in the 1950s and the variety of programs that the Laurel Historical Society is offering in the future. Two lucky members took home raffle winnings of a 1950s toy basket and a picture of Main Street in the 1950s.

Over thirty children joined the Laurel Historical Society as we celebrated a Historic New Years. Children participated in a number of crafts, making noise makers and hats to take home. They also learned about a variety of cultures traditional New Years customs and foods in this interactive and tasty learning experience!

The Laurel Museum Open House raised significant funds as the Laurel Museum Shop became decorated for the Holidays. This years ornament of St. Philips was a resounding success and is still available online in the gift shop.

Paper Raiser to Benefit Laurel Elementary
A Paper Raiser was held to benefit Laurel Elementary. Community Members, Volunteers, and local businesses donated paper to help Laurel Elementary students and teachers.

Thanks to the sponsorship of Main Street Pharmacy, the Laurel Historical Society hosted an first time ever, "Taste of Laurel" in the Laurel Pool Room. With sixty-five people making their way through the Museum and the Pool Room and 6 local businesses in attendance, the first ever Taste of Laurel was a success.
Advertise Your Creativity Contest
This contest was held in the Fall of 2008 and was a collaboration between Patuxent Publishing and the Laurel Historical Society. Local children and teens were asked to submit an advertisement for the Laurel Museum, the winner of which would be put in the Laurel Leader. With over forty contestants, the contest became very competitive. The winner of the contest was announced at "Eat Here: A Taste of Laurel" and Maddie Waters was happy to receive the good news. This lecture was given by Susan Soderberg and was attended by thirty-three people. Susan discussed the controversy over whether or not Quilts were used as a means to relay messages on the Underground Railroad.
Twenty-One community educators joined the Laurel Historical Society as we shared our lesson plans, activities, and resources. Educators were able to express their needs to the LHS through lively conversation and surveys.
Twenty-Two attendees visited Hampton National Historic Site's Mansion, Farmhouse, and Slave Quarters on a rainy Saturday.
Event held September 11, 2008 on the lawn of the Laurel Museum. Forty people attended and participated while George McCeney sang folk songs, some of which covered Laurel History. This event was featured on Laurel's Public Television Station.
