“And They’re Off!: 100 Years at Laurel Park ”

Our new exhibit opening February 2011 will explore the history and racing highlights at Laurel Park, and the track’s impact on the Laurel community.

The Laurel Race Track opened in October, 1911.  Since that time it’s been an active part of the Laurel community.  Located in Anne Arundel County, the City of Laurel in Prince George’s County is the town nearest the track.  Races like the Washington International and the Maryland Million, drew large social crowds, and included celebrities ranging from Elizabeth Taylor to the Aga Khan have visited the track.  Horses from Secretariat to Seabiscuit to Billy Barton and jockeys such as Eddie Arcaro and Ron Turcotte and trainer Lucien Laurin have been part of the Laurel racing scene.

The Laurel Historical Society is currently collecting objects and images to help us plan this exhibit. To learn more, click here.

We are also interviewing people who were in any way involved with the track. Whether you're a business that caters to jockeys, a jockey yourself, or just someone who likes to spend Saturday afternoon at the track, we'd love to hear your story.

To schedule an interview, email info@laurelhistoricalsociety.org or call 301.725.7975.
