The Medal of Honor was created during the civil War.

Laurel born Horace Capron Jr. received the award posthumously for his efforts at Chickahominy and Ashland, Virginia, while he was a sergeant with the 8th  Ill.  cavalry.

He joined the 14th Ill. after it was formed and fought with his father.  He was killed February 6, 1864 in North Carolina fighting Cherokee Indians. It is thought Horace was not present when his son died, but was in Illinois on a recruiting effort.
